Cremation is offered at just two locations in Ireland – Dublin and Cork – but this isn’t the first time a third facility has been mooted for County Clare with planning permission granted for a crematorium in Shannon in 2007.

That facility has never been developed but now a local company – Fenloe Properties Limited has lodged plans for "Lakeside Cremtorium", one kilometre West of Clarecastle which would also include a chapel, remembrance garden and graveyard close to Ballybeg Lough.

The project is being overseen by Dignity, Caring Funeral Services – the largest single operator of cremotorium in Britain with 37 such facilities throughout England and Scotland, and the group anticipates hiring a number of staff in the area if successful with their planning application in the new year.

The Crematorium Building design is based on the iconic Poulnabrone Dolmen in the Burren, and the applicants describe their plans as a unique opportunity for County Clare and the West of Ireland.
