Uisce Éireann is urging people in Clare to be mindful of their water usage as the prolonged spell of good weather is set to continue.
The water authority says Clare is one of 22 counties where water supply has been determined to have reached drought status.
Tankering of water is currently taking place to the Carron Water Treatment Plant to maintain supply and should it fall any lower locals will be informed of any supply restrictions.
In the meantime, people are asked to conserve water by not using hoses or power washers for gardening and cleaning, not to leave taps running for an extended period of time, to use showers rather than taking a bath and to ensure dishwashers and washing machines are fully loaded prior to starting a cycle.
Uisce Éireann’s water operations manager, Darragh Conneely, says works are ongoing to ensure supply is maintained and protected.
“Levels in many water sources are significantly lower than normal for this time of year following a dryer-than-average autumn, winter and spring. On top of this, the recent spell of warm weather has led to an increase in demand across many of our supplies, putting further pressure on the network and reservoirs.
“We’re doing everything we can to protect and maintain supplies as we go through the summer but we’re also asking customer in Clare for their help by doing what they can to reduce their use. If everyone takes a few simple steps to reduce the volume used around the home and garden we can make our water go further and help maintain normal supplies.”
