UHL Records Over 10,000 More Patients On Trolleys Than Second Busiest Facility In 2024

University Hospital Limerick recorded over 10,000 more patients on trolleys than the next busiest facility throughout 2024 according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation’s annual report.

Throughout the year, 23,203 patients were without a bed at the Dooradoyle facility, excluding weekends and bank holidays. This amount exceeds the hospital’s previous record for overcrowding of 21,445.

This figure also represents a disparity of 10,041 between UHL and the next busiest facility, Cork University Hospital and is more than double the number seen at the third busiest, University Hospital Galway.

Overall in 2024, 122,186 patients were admitted to hospitals across Ireland without a bed in according to the INMO, with children representing 2,043 of those admitted.
