The Spanish Point native studied medicine at University College Dublin, graduating in 1947, before he later embarked on a career in politics which would see him hold a number of Ministerial  positions, and serving two terms as President.

A lecture theatre in the college’s medical school will now be named after Patrick Hillery, who worked as coroner for West Clare and served as a member of the National Health Council during his pre-politics career.

His son John Hillery says it’s a great honour.
