Post mortem exams are due to be carried out on the bodies of two Dublin women who died in swimming accident off the Kerry coast last night.
The women – in their 60s and 70s – were swimming at Inch Strand when they got into difficulty shortly after 7 pm.
They were rescued and airlifted to hospital but died a short time later.
The two Dublin women – one aged 67 from Terenure and one aged 70 from Clondalkin – were holidaying in the area and were swimming at Inch Strand yesterday evening when they got into difficulty.
The alarm was raised by a third woman who was with them shortly after 7 o'clock.
Lifeguards managed to bring the women ashore where CPR was administered.
They were then airlifted by the Coast Guard to Kerry General Hospital in a critical condition – but were pronounced dead late last night.
It brings to three the number of deaths in Irish waters over the past 24 hours – after a man drowned in a boating accident off Schull in County Cork yesterday.
