Patrick and Finn Troy entered the caving network at Pollnagollum on Saturday afternoon, but became lost and were unable to get back out.

The caves, which are up to 20 kilometres long, stretch between Lisdoonvarna and Ballyvaughan.

When the pair could not an exit, they stayed in the cave on Saturday night and tried to stay warm, pending a rescue attempt.

The Irish Cave Rescue Organisation was asked by Ennis Gardaí to help them yesterday afternoon, and a number of search and rescue teams entered the passages.

They were found just after 5pm, 28 hours after they'd gone in.

Patrick has said that they only meant to stay there for 2 hours, and admitted that he should have notified someone about their plans.
