Gardai have arrested two men following a gun attack in Bunratty in which another man was shot.
The victim -who was attending a family wedding remains in a critical condition at Limerick Regional Hospital.
According to gardai – a 21 year old man from Moyross in Limerick – was attending a relatives’s wedding at the Bunratty Castle Hotel when he went outside for a cigarette at around 4 am.
He was then approached by two men – who its believed were laying in wait – and shot a number of times in the head.
The gunmen then fled scene in what’s being described as a dark coloured saloon type car.
The victim was rushed to Limerick Regional Hospital where his condition is described as critical.
Gardai recovered a firearm close to where the shooting took place and the garda technical bureau is now carrying out a forensic examination of the scene.
Two people have now been arrested in connection with the incident – The men – who are both in their twenties were detained in Cork City this morning and are being held at Mayfield and Gurranabraher Garda Stations under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act.
Meanwhile, gardai are due to hold an internal conference in the next hour to disuss the direction of their investigation but are still appealing for anyone who may have noticed anything suspicious in the bunratty area last night to contact them- They are particularly anxious to speak to any night time staff or taxi drivers.
It’s understood the victim- was is known to the Gardaí and has served a number of jail sentences for serious criminal activity- its also believed a number of previous attempts had been made on his life in the past few weeks.
