Saint Patrick’s in Fanore and Scariff Community College both came under the spotlight in latest round of inspection reports.
In February, department inspectors visited Saint Patrick’s National School in Fanore Ballyvaughan and among the strengths highlighted were the professionalism, teamwork and high levels of dedication by teaching staff.
The board of management’s efforts in maintaining the premises, and exemplary standard of pupils’ handwriting was also highlighted.
The report recommended a parents association be set up and urged the school to publish either a newsletter or create a website.
Inspectors also spent a week at Scariff Community College where they carried out a whole school evaluation and also separate evaluations on several key subjects.
Overall they found the school had a dedicated and committed teaching staff with a high standard of support for students.
They recommended the training of teacher representatives on the board of management and that Irish should be timetabled each day for all junior-cycle students.
Looking specifically at the subjects, in Home Economics, the inspectors found the teachers’ approach highly experienced, innovative, and responsive with very good outcomes by students.
In English a variety of active learning strategies were observed, along with positive interactions between teachers and students
The school participates in the Young Scientists Exhibition and the inspectors called for the provision of double lessons in science, in light of the investigative approach in the revised syllabus.
And when it came to Guidance they recommended greater balance in its provision between junior and senior cycles
