The Department of Education has confirmed its considering the possible closure of a number of Clare National Schools
In a statement to Clare FM a spokesperson said that the viability of two schools in particular were being looked at due to dwindling enrolment numbers.
While the Education Department hasn’t stated which two primary schools in Clare could be facing closure, it’s understood they are in the west of the county.
Both currently have children enrolled and teaching principals, while one also has some learning support hours for its students.
However, the department says enrolments have declined to such a level that their viability may need to be considered.
In a statement to Clare FM a spokesperson confirmed they contacted the patron and chairperson of the board of management of one of the schools earlier this month, while the other has confirmed it will reply to the department following liaison with its own board of management.
The news comes less than a week after a primary school in Kerry was closed down after no students were enrolled for the new school year in September.
