Two East Clare men have appeared in court charged in connection with an incident in which a Garda’s private car was set on fire at Scarriff Garda Station on Tuesday morning.
Neil Kelly of Bohatch, Mountshannon is charged with arson, while Brian Moloney, who’s also has an address in Mountshannon faced a charge relating to the criminal damage of the Garda station in Scarriff.
At Ennis District Court today, Inspector John O’Sullivan of Killaloe Garda Station said that the alleged act was an effort to intimidate a young female member of the Gardaí
The officer discovered her 07 registered Renault Megane car on fire at around 12.30 am on Tuesday morning, as well as damage to windows at the Garda station in Scarriff.
Today 38 year old Neil Kelly from Mountshannon was charged with arson of the car – his solicitor said he has no previous convictions and retains the presumption of innocence.
A second man, 34 year old Brian Moloney also of Bohatch, Mountshannon was charged with the criminal damage of Scariff Garda station on Monday night by allegedly causing 500 euro worth of damage to windows there
Gardaí objected to bail based on the nature of the offences and the strength of the evidence, but in each case, Judge Patrick Durcan remanded both men in custody with consent to bail with strenuous conditions attached.
Both men are due back before Ennis District Court next Wednesday
