The flight from Texas to Istanbul made an emergency landing at the Mid-West airport yesterday morning after a hand-written note was discovered by crew.

A large-scale security operation got underway at Shannon Airport yesterday after a Turkish Airlines flight from Texas to Istanbul was diverted there following a bomb threat.

It's understood that the bomb scare was sparked by a written note which had been found on board the aircraft by its crew.

Fire and medical personnel were dispatched to Shannon, along with armed Gardaí and the Irish coastguard and the boeing 777-300, which had 227 people on board, landed at the mid-west airport around 11am.

Passengers and crew were evacuated to the terminal building where they were questioned by Gardaí and searches of the plane and its contents were carried out.

No explosives were found on board the plane and the flight departed Shannon Airport around 7 o'clock yesterday evening.

In a statement, Turkish Airlines confirmed that the plane had "continued it's flight after the termination of necessary procedures, as it has been understood that it was a false alert".
