Donald Trump's Doonbeg Golf Resort says it could expand its facilities, but only if it gets the go-ahead for coastal protection works.

Plans for a 10 million euro sea protection barrier have been pulled, but an application will now be made for a modified plan.

While it had been supported by many locals in the Doonbeg area, the plans of Trump International Golf Links and Hotel to construct a 2.8 kilometre bern along Doughmore Beach were strongly opposed by environmental groups.

An application for the project was lodged in May, but then withdrawn last evening in favour of this new proposal.

The resort will now seek permission to install two separate sections of rock armour, totalling 850m in length, while metal sheet piles would be inserted into the ground.

The works would be carried out on the lands of the resort, and once completed, would not be visible.

The modified plan is smaller in scale than what had been planned initially, but Trump Doonbeg says previous storms, devastated the golf course there, and that future expansion is dependent on getting the go-ahead.
