The number of patients waiting for beds at the region’s main hospital has shot up today.

The latest analysis from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation shows there were 127 people on trolleys at University Hospital Limerick during morning rounds, 59 of those in the Emergency Department.

It’s well in excess of the numbers on trolleys at all nine eastern hospitals combined.

The INMO has hit out over the situation, saying this type of overcrowding is completely out of kilter with the time of year.
