There has been a sharp rise in the level of overcrowding at the region’s main hospital.
The latest figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation show there were 114 patients waiting for a bed at University Hospital Limerick during morning rounds, with 58 of those on trolleys or chairs in the Emergency Department.
The overall figure is 50 more than the next busiest facility; Cork University Hospital and double the number on trolleys at Galway University Hospital; the third busiest facility in the country today.
Overall, 553 admitted patients were waiting for beds at hospitals across the country this morning, according to the nurses’ union.
