He passed away yesterday at Carrigoran House Nursing Home in Newmarket on Fergus, at the age of 89, following a long illness.

Paying tribute, the Primate of All Ireland, Archbishop Eamon Martin, says his ministry both as a Priest and a Bishop, was of immense significance.

President Michael D Higgins has praised his work as Chairman of Trócaire – and the charity has also issued a statement, saying his work benefited millions of people around the world.

Bishop Casey’s family – including his son Peter – say he was a great source of love and support.

A spokesperson for the family says funeral details will be announced later this week.
