Long standing former Fianna Fail Councillor and Mayor of Clare Sean Hillery has passed away.
A cousin of the late President Dr, Patrick Hillery , the Shannon Businessman died suddenly in Dublin this morning following a short illness.
Expressing his shock at the sudden death of Sean Hillary – his cousin and current Fianna Fail Councillor in Spanish Point, Michael Hillery said they shared a long political career together.
Sean Hillary first entered Clare County Council in 1985 and served constituents in the Shannon Electoral area for nearly two decades during which time he held the mayoral chains from 1999 to 2001.
Leading the tributes Michael Hillery says he worked diligently for the electorate who voted him into office.
A Shannon based pharmacist by profession – Sean Hillery was also a former President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland – he also represented his local community at town council level from 1994 until 2009 – where he also served as Mayor of Shannon for several terms
Describing his death as a shock, Fellow councillor at both town and county level- Patrica McCarthy described him as a decent and caring person who served his constituents well
As well as having a long standing political career – Sean Hillery was well known for his close links to the late President of Ireland and Spanish point native Dr Paddy Hillary -who was his first cousin.
Dr Hillary’s son John, who contested the last General Election as a Fianna Fail candidate said his father was very proud of Sean’s achievements
Sean Hillary is survived by his three sons, Feidlim, Shane and Barry along with his daugher Majella – he was predeceased by his wife Paula.
