Transport Secured For Leona The Loggerhead

A loggerhead turtle, which was washed up on the Clare coast almost a year ago, WILL now be flown to the Canary Islands.

The Kilrush-based Irish Whale and Dolphin Group rescued the badly injured turtle, named Leona, from the beach at Quilty last December and it has since been cared for at the Galway Atlantaquarium.

They were forced to issue a public call for help, however, to secure transport for Leona to Gran Canaria, so that it could be released into warmer waters.

Aer Lingus have now agreed to transport Leona on a flight next week and the Whale and Dolphin Group are looking to fundraise to cover some of the costs of their year-long effort.
