Transatlantic Cargo Jet Makes Emergency Landing At Shannon Airport

A transatlantic cargo jet has made an emergency landing at Shannon Airport this morning.

Kalitta Air flight CKS-844 was travelling from Miami in the U.S. to Amsterdam in The Netherlands when the crew declared a Mayday at around 8.00am today. The crew reported that a cargo fire indication had activated in the cockpit.

At the time, the Boeing 747 jet, with a crew of five on board, was over 1,000 kilometres off the west coast of Ireland.

Once informed of the emergency,  air traffic controllers advised authorities at Shannon while the airport’s own fire and rescue service was alerted and external response agencies were also notified.

Units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Shannon and Ennis stations along with National Ambulance Service resources and An Gardaí were all dispatched to the airport.

The flight landed safely at 9.13am and was pursued along the runway by rescue vehicles which also remained with the jet until it had reach it’s parking stand.

The flight crew later confirmed that the indication light had extinguished after landing.

It was later confirmed that there was no fire on board.
