Town Council reject Ennis Retail Park

Controversial plans to construct a 34 million euro retail park on the outskirts of Ennis have been rejected.

Ennis Town Council have deemed that the proposed development would be ‘premature’ as required flood works for the site have not been carried out.

Ennis Town Council has refused planning permission for the retail park, which was to be developed by Michael Lynch Ltd on a site opposite St. Flannan’s College.

Developers claimed that 300 jobs would have been created during construction, and 200 more when operational, while the project included provision for offices, a public library and a retail unit with Tesco as the main tenant.

The project was opposed by a number of groups, including the town’s chamber of commerce, and now Ennis Town Council have announced that it will NOT get their approval.

While finding that the Plan is compliant with the town’s development plan, officials have decided that the proposal is premature pending the upgrade of the waste water treatment plant at Clareabbey and pending the implementation of the Ennis South Flood Relief Scheme.

The decision is open to appeal.
