Physical activity, healthy eating, sexual health and tobacco-free initiatives are just some of the main aims of the Healthy Clare Strategic Plan.

The strategy, which forms part of the Healthy Ireland national plan, begins immediately and run until 2021, with the aim of improving the overall health of Clare’s population.

Fine Gael’s Catherine Byrne is a Junior Minister at the Department of Health with responsibility for health promotion.

She’s in Clare today to launch the plan and says it’s vital we change our mindset around exercise – particularly for younger people.

The Healthy Clare Strategy will be implemented by the Clare Local Development Company for its duration.

CLDC is a subcommittee of Clare County Council, with 18 members from organisations in both the private and public sectors.

It’s chair Andrew Dundas says these groups working together will be a key factor in the successful rollout of the plan.

And now that the plan has been launched, focus turns to how it will be implemented.

Karen Fennessy of the Rural Development Department in Clare County Council outlines what’ll happen next.
