Clare County Fire Service says that in the event of strike action by 999 call centre staff, an alternative communications centre would have to be established by the local authority.

SIPTU is to ballot its members at the Munster Regional Control Centre on Mulgrave Street in Limerick, which covers seven local authority areas in the region, including Clare.

Staff are said to be angry over a failure by Limerick City and County Council, which operates the centre, to engage on issues relating to pay, conditions and treatment of workers.

The issue has been referred to the Workplace Relations Commission through SIPTU, but Limerick Senator Paul Gavan has been telling me that the local authority has failed to engage on the matter:

Statement from Clare County County Fire Service
In the event of such strike action occurring, it would be necessary for Clare County Council to establish an alternative communications centre to provide emergency call-taking and mobilisation services for persons requiring the assistance of the Fire Service in Clare.
