Thousands Of Surgeries Could Be Cancelled Over Strike

Thousands of patients scheduled for surgery could have their appointments cancelled tomorrow with up to 10-thousand hospital support staff across the country going on strike.

The workers including porters, healthcare assistants and theatre staff will stage a 24 hour walkout in a row over pay.

There are also fears that some hospitals won’t be able to provide regular meals and hot food to patients as kitchen staff are also going on strike.

Services will continue as normal at Ennis General Hospital, but disruption to services is expected at other Midwest Hospitals, namely University Hospital Limerick, University Maternity Hospital Limerick and Croom Orthopaedic Hospital.

Management at UL Hospitals Group are due to meet with SIPTU today to finalise contingency plans, but they’re warning that the strike will have a significant impact on services if it goes ahead.
