The Rural Affairs Minister says laws surrounding the minimum depth of graves don't need to change.
Ann Phelan has been urged to look at legislation on the minimum depth of graves, parts of which date back to 1888 and include a requirement that graves be at least eight foot deep.
This requirement was deemed unworkable by local undertakers when included in provisional burial ground bye-laws issued by Clare County Council – those laws have yet to pass, but this requirement is being removed by the local authority.
Minister Phelan has rejected the calls for change saying flexibility is already allowed
