Controversial plans for a telecommunications tower will proceed in North Clare despite multiple local objections.

Developer, Shared Access LTD maintains the structure is necessary to boost mobile and data coverage in the region.

In total 17 people objected to the proposal, to erect a 24 metre tower with 9 antennae at Blakemount near Tubber and Crusheen in close proximity to the M18 Motorway.

Among the concerns raised was that the infrastructure would be visually intrusive, would lead to health risks, property devaluation and that the incorrect townland was listed on the planning application.

One submission even claimed that chronic exposure to electromagnetic fields generated by the tower could cause significant health effects relating to cancer, cardiac issues, depression, as well as fertility and reproductive issues.

A planning report submitted on the developer’s behalf, however states it will be built in line with international guidelines protecting against the thermal effects of radio emissions.

A report by mobile network Three Ireland, meanwhile, says the installation has been meticulously planned to provide the best possible network performances within the limitations of the rural environment.

It further states that providing a base station at Blakemount will provide mobile voice and data coverage along the M18 and surrounding areas that will improve service for residents and local businesses.

Clare County Council granted permission subject to four conditions.
