A technical assessment is to be considered following a recent inspection of the Daniel O'Connell monument in Ennis.

The investigation was prompted by fears that the iconic statue had sustained damage, perhaps caused by storms over recent years.

Interim results have ruled out any significant lean, while an internal Council report has suggested that plugs, inserted into the statue to repair flaws in the limestone, have now fallen out, leading to circular and rectangular indents on O'Connell's face.

There is evidence of a nother plug in situ on his hand.

Numerous hairline cracks were also discovered on the structure, most likely resulting from natural weaknesses or defects in the original stone.
