Teachers hit out at calls for cut in allowances

The Secondary School Teachers Union, the A-S-T-I, says allowances teachers receive are part of their contract and therefore cannot be revoked.

New figures released by the Department of Education show that the State paid out over half a billion euro last year in allowances for primary and secondary school teachers.

Teachers can earn additional payment for such things as teaching through Irish, teaching in a Gaeltacht area and for doing supervision yard duties.
