The argument centres on the Government's plans to have teachers asses 40 per cent of their own students work.

27,000 members of the Association of Secondary Teachers of Ireland and the Teachers Union of Ireland are demonstrating across the country today, while around 7,000 Clare students are at home this lunchtime as a result.

Earlier, Education Minister Jan O'Sullivan described today's action as unnecessary and disproportionate.
