Taoiseach seeks AG advice on fiscal treaty

 

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny will this morning formally ask the Attorney General for advice on whether Ireland should hold a referendum on the new EU fiscal treaty.

The deal finalised in Brussels last night aims to impose German-style budget discipline on all EU member states.

Opposition parties want the government to give people their say by holding a referendum.

But last night the Taoiseach Enda Kenny said the government would only put the treaty to a vote – if the attorney general advises that it’s necessary.
