Taoiseach says government cannot strip orders of charitable status

The Taoiseach says he’s not going to get into a legal row with the four orders of nuns who are refusing to contribute to the Magdalene compensation scheme.

It means the taxpayer will foot the full bill – which could run to 58 million euro.

Enda Kenny says he’s conscious that the women don’t have time on their side and need the payments now.
