Homes and businesses in flood-hit areas of Clare may learn more about their future insurance premiums today.
The Taoiseach and Tanaiste are meeting with insurance industry representitives this afternoon to discuss the difficultly many people are having in getting cover in flood-prone areas.
Enda Kenny says he's planning to have a "forthright discussion" with insurance providers over the refusal of companies to insure homeowners and businesses who've been flooded.
He wants them to relax their rules in areas that now have flood defence schemes.
One suggestion to tackle the introduction of a levy on home insurance policies, similar to the UK model where a ten pound annual levy is added to each household’s insurance premium.
However, Minister of State at the Department of Finance, Simon Harris, says he’s not in favour of this approach.
Parts of Clare were the most seriously affected by the heavy rains of the last few weeks.
The cost of the repairs to Clare County Council has been estimated at around 2 million, though that figure may rise as the flood water recedes and the full extent of the damage is revealed.
Kilmaley Fianna Fail Councillor Tom McNamara wants the final figure calculated as soon as possible and says any repair work must involve preventative measures.
