Taoiseach Accused of Creating Long Waits for Nursing Home Beds

The Taoiseach has been accused of causing an increase in nursing home waiting lists.

In the Dáil this afternoon, Fianna Fáil's Micheál Martin has hit out at a reduction in funding for the Fair Deal scheme which helps people cover the cost of nursing home care.

This has forced people to spend up to 15 weeks in hospital beds, as they wait for approval, or paying mounting bills to cover all of the cost themselves.

Last month, Clare FM revealed that waiting lists in this county are much longer than elsewhere in the MidWest.

The Taoiseach has promised to clear the backlog but Deputy Martin says that was solely the creation of Enda Kenny's government.
