Swimming Bans, Advisory Notices In Place For Four Clare Beaches

Clare County Council has introduced a temporary swimming ban in two Clare beaches, as well as a ‘Do Not Swim’ advisory note at two more.

The swimming prohibition is in place at Kilkee, and at the front beach in Quilty, due to increased levels of bacteria in the water.

For the same reason, it’s advised not to swim at White Strand, Doonbeg and White Strand, Miltown Malbay until further notice.

The advisory notes have been issued by the Council on HSE advice, and the increased levels of bacteria is being blamed on recent heavy rainfall.

The Council says the situation is being monitored regularly.

Clare County Council has issued the following statement:

Temporary prohibition and advice against swimming at the following locations in Clare

Clare County Council, on the advice of the HSE, has placed a temporary prohibition on swimming in Kilkee and Quilty (front beach) due to increased bacterial levels in the bathing water. The situation is being monitored regularly and the prohibition on swimming will remain until further notice.

Due to increased bacterial levels in the bathing water at White Strand Doonbeg and White Strand Miltown, it is advised not to swim at these locations until further notice.

The risk from increased bacterial levels is a result of run-off from the catchment area after heavy rainfall.
