Survey shows parents favour patron run school

A new Red C survey shows three out of four parents would rather send their children to schools run by patron bodies, other than the church.

However the study, commissioned by the Irish Primary School Principals’ Network, also shows that almost seventy per cent of parents still want religion taught within the school day.

At present, at least 92 per cent of Irish primary schools are run by the church.

Earlier this month, a report by the Forum on Patronage and Pluralism recommended transferring about 250 schools from the Catholic Church to new patrons over a long-term period.
