Clare Animal Welfare says the number of dogs being surrendered to pounds and private rescues has reached crisis levels.
Fourteen animal shelters across the country have ran out of space in the past three weeks, while five facilities closed down on Monday alone.
Clare Anmial Welfare currently has no capacity to take in more dogs, having received seven to ten requests for surrenders of dogs on average every week in recent times.
Chair of the charity, Ciara Copeland says funding alone won’t solve the issue and she’s appealing to dog owners to think carefully before going ahead with a decision to surrender their animals.
