Surfer in difficulty at Cliffs of Moher pulled to safety

A surfer is recovering after he was rescued during a major operation at the Cliffs of Moher last night.

The man had been part of a group that was surfing nea the Cliffs last evening, and search efforts was launched at around 7:30 when it was discovered when he had not returned to shore.

The Doolin and Kilkee units of the Irish coast guard were involved  in the operation along with the RNLI lifeboat from the Aran Islands and the Sligo-based rescue helicopter.

He was eventually winched to safety before 10 o'clock, and was brought to University Hospital Galway where he was being treated for injuries and hypothermia.
