Clare men remain among the most likely in the country to take their own lives.

New statistics show the rate of male suicide here is the third highest in Ireland.

These CSO statistics are based on provisional figures for 2016, and show a welcome fall of one per week in the number of suicides throughout Ireland last year.

However, that drop-off has not been experienced in Clare where 16 people have again been found to have taken their own lives.

14 of these were males, reflecting the overall trend of higher suicide rates amongst men, and in fact the CSO statistics show the rate of male suicide here last year was lower than only Carlow and Kerry.

If the rate of male suicide in Clare was in line with the national average, then seven fewer men would have taken their lives here last year.
