A Clare Government TD believes the suggestion of an elective-only hospital for the Midwest should form part of discussions surrounding chronic overcrowding at the region’s main hospital.
Cathal Crowe is reacting to comments from former HSE Director General Tony O’Brien, who’s said the health service in the Midwest doesn’t have the capacity to meet the needs of the population it serves and that additional bed capacity needs to be priorised ahead the rest of the country.
It follows record overcrowding at University Hospital Limerick, with trolley numbers reaching a peak of 111 on one day last week.
The Sláintecare report has recommended three elective-only hospitals in Cork, Galway and Dublin and Meelick Fianna Fáil Deputy Cathal Crowe says a Midwest facility should feed into discussions around those.
