Gusts of up to 75 miles an hour have been recorded by Met Eireann at Shannon Airport, some of the strongest in the country, and driving conditions are hazardous.

A tree has been knocked on the main Cooraclare/Cree Road, and Gardaí in West Clare are urging people to stay indoors due to the strong winds.

Another tree has also fallen near the Clareabbey Roundabout on the outskirts of Ennis, while in North Clare Gardaí say ESB wires are hanging down on the road from Doolin to the Cliffs of Moher.

There have also been two crashes earlier on the M18 motorway, and the National Roads Authority is urging drivers to be careful, while Clare County Council has also issued warnings.

Conditions are expected to ease this evening, and Met Eireann's weather alert expires at nine o'clock tonight.
