State Paid €5.9m In 2014 To Cover Limerick Tunnel Traffic Levels

The State spent paid over €100,000 a week last year to the operators of the Limerick Tunnel because of lower than expected traffic levels.

The Tunnel, which is a tolled route, opened in 2010 and has been built and run on a public private partnership basis by Direct Route (Limerick) Ltd.

This agreement guaranteed a level of income for the company, in the event that traffic levels did not hit a minimum amount, and as a result €5.9 million was paid to the firm last year.

It has also been reported that the total payments to the firm since 2011 is €19.5 million.
