The solicitor for the family of a Clare woman who died at University Hospital Limerick a day after suffering a miscarriage says it’s clear it was another “unnecessary and needless” death at the facility.
Leona Cusack of Ballycasey in Shannon presented at the maternity hospital in the early hours of February 15th while she was just over five weeks pregnant following IVF.
The inquest, which returned a “narrative” verdict”, heard that clinical markers for sepsis were present on the morning of February 17th but she didn’t receive broad spectrum antibiotics until 4pm which doctors admitted as a breach of protocol.
Solicitor for Leona’s family, Damien Tansey, says the fact the subsequent independent report failed to reference sepsis is “extraordinary”.
