The Government Chief Whip has confirmed that there will be changes to social welfare rates in next month’s budget.
That’s despite the coalition making plans in its programme for Government not to reduce social welfare payments.
Paul Keogh has also confirmed that the budget will be delivered over a two day period, for the first time ever.
Spending changes will be announced on December 5th, while changes in taxation will be outlined in the Dáil on December 6th.
But Deputy Keogh says with savings of 3.8 billion needed, the Government have no choice but to looking at changing social welfare rates.
Meanwhile, AA Roadwatch is calling on the Government not to hit motorists with unrealistic car tax and petrol hikes in next month’s budget.
It’s being reported today that drivers could be facing a 63 percent increase in road tax and an additional 4 cent per litre of petrol.
According to the Sunday Times, the Government plan to increase motor tax by 5 per cent generally – but greener and more efficient cars face a steeper increase.
