The number of households on the waiting list for a social home in Clare has fallen marginally in the last year.
Figures from Clare County Council show while there are fewer households on the social housing list here, there are now more on the list who aren’t in receipt of any housing support compared to this time twelve months ago.
As of the end of April, there are 2,796 households on the social housing list in Clare, indicating a 2% reduction on the same time last year.
The level of demand for a one-bed or two-bed house has grown by 1% to 2,183 while the number seeking a three-bed property is down 10% to 467 and just 146 households are awaiting a four-bed or five-bed dwelling, pointing to a 20% decline.
Looking at the 10 most in demand areas of the county, the numbers waiting for a social home have dropped in all but three.
The number of households seeking a social home in the joint area of Feakle, Scariff and Whitegate is down 20% to 105 while demand in Miltown, Malbay, Mullagh and Quilty has fallen by 9% to 80.
Similar declines have been seen in Shannon, the Inagh, Ennistymon and Lahinch areas, Kilrush, the Meelick, Parteen and Westbury catchment area, and Kilkee.
There has been no change in the level of social housing demand in Ennis which remains the most in demand area with 1,227 households awaiting a social home there.
The number of households looking for a property in Clarecastle is up 5% to 185 while it’s up 8% to 83 in Corofin and Ruan.
Local authority data also shows that 1,445 or 51% of households on the social housing list in Clare aren’t in receipt of any form of housing support.
As this is up 35 on the same month in 2024, it means overall housing need in Clare has risen by 2% in last the twelve months.
