Slight Drop In Number Of Homeless People In The Midwest

There’s been a slight drop in the number of homeless people in Clare since this time last year.

The Department of Housing says there were 63 people availing of supports from homeless services here at the end of July.


289 people across the Midwest were homeless during the last week in July – just over 20% of these in Clare.

It’s a slight drop from last month’s figure of 291 in this region – and an even bigger drop when compared to this time last year. In 2019, there were 73 people homeless in Clare and 343 across the Midwest – meaning the figure has dropped by just over 15% in the last 12 months.

There’s a total of 45 families in the Midwest now looking for a home – again a drop compared to last year. 30 of these are single-parent families.

36 households in this region have left homelessness since this time last year.

Earlier this month, Midwest Simon expressed concern that rising rental prices across Clare may be forcing people from this county into homelessness.

Midwest Simon says homelessness here has reduced by 18% since the beginning of the summer in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nationally, over 6,000 people are considered homeless – just over 4% of this figure are based here in the Midwest.
