Sláínte An Chláir is calling for an urgent overhaul of the approval process for European cancer medication in Ireland.
It follows a new report from the Irish Society of Medical Oncologists found that doctors are unable to prescribe the appropriate treatment to 25% of patients due to flaws within the HSE’s drug reimbursement procedure.
Currently, pharmaceutical companies must apply to the European Medicines Agency for a licence before they can seek restitution from the HSE, even if the drugs are already sanctioned for use in the EU.
