SIPTU is to launch a national campaign seeking the protection of local fire services, weeks after Clare County Council was criticised for implementing a new operations plan.
Firefighters who are members of the Union are to call on local election candidates to commit to protecting their local fire services, describing this as one of their most important functions.
SIPTU, and the Irish Fire and Emergency services Association, both criticised Clare County Council for implementing a new plan which, they say, could put the safety of firefighters and the public at risk.
However, the county's chief fire officer has insisted the changes will be minimal.
