SIPTU says there’s considerable anger and hurt among workers at Shannon Airport.

The union has now formally commenced a ballot for industrial action, up to and including strikes, with the process expected to be concluded in a fortnight’s time.

It follows a meeting between SIPTU representatives and Shannon Airport Management yesterday, during which the company outlined that it’s not in a position to withdraw a 20% pay cut for employees.

The union has previously refused to engage in talks on restructuring, until pay was restored to normal levels.

SIPTU’s Aviation Organiser, Tony Caroll has been telling Clare FM’s Fiona Cahill that the current situation is unacceptable.

A spokesperson for Shannon Group has said that “As a result of the devastation caused by COVID-19, with passenger numbers at Shannon Airport down 91% in September, Shannon Group has had to take difficult but necessary measures to reduce costs.

This includes a temporary 20% pay reduction for Shannon Airport staff who are currently working full time.”
