SIPTU Members ‘Shocked And Disappointed’ At Lack Of Shannon Heritage Transfer Funding In Budget

SIPTU members say they’re ‘shocked and disappointed’ with no funding allocation being announced for the transfer of Shannon Heritage sites in the Budget.

Negotiations between the Government, the Shannon Airport Group and Clare County Council are understood to be ongoing.

Talks on the operation of Knappgoue Castle, Craggaunowen and Bunratty Castle & Folk Park have been ongoing since February.

Clare County Council has made it clear that it feels it needs a multi-million euro package over a period of several years to facilitate the transfer.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin insisted talks were progressing when he visited Shannon last week.

However, no provision for the move has been made in Budget 2023, which has caused an outcry from SIPTU members who work at the sites.

In a statement seen by Clare FM, the union describes the move as ‘a failure’ that leaves its members in what it claims is ‘a very precarious situation’.

The union says while it supports the transfer and has had ‘meaningful engagement’ during the process so far, they’ve been left ‘terribly disappointed’ by the omission from Budget 2023.

Employees say they’ll call on local political representatives to explain what they believe is an ’empty promise’ from Government.
