There’s been a significant drop in passenger numbers at Shannon Airport despite a rise at the country’s two other main airports.
New figures from the CSO show the number of people travelling through the Midwest airport dropped by 5.6% between July and September.
Clare FM’s James Mulhall reports:
10.5 million passengers travelled through the main Irish Airports in the third quarter of this year, a rise of 5.4% on the same period last year.
But while Dublin and Cork airports both saw a boost in footfall, the news wasn’t so bright for Shannon.
The Midwest Airport saw passenger numbers drop by 5.6% between July and September to 531,272.
London Heathrow was the most popular route with over 77,900 arrivals and departures from Shannon over the three months, followed by JFK in New York, London Stanstead and London Gatwick.
Boston, Malaga, Faro, Philadelphia and Manchester also feature in the top ten.
As did Newark, a service which has been dropped by United Airlines, with the airline blaming a drop in demand for it’s decision.
It was one of a number of routes which have been discontinued including United’s Chicago route and Ryanair’s service to Berlin.
