Shock in south east Clare as local man is killed in Limerick bridge incident

Shock is being expressed in south east Clare following the tragic death of a young local man while working on a bridge in Limerick.

29 year old Bryan Whelan from Bridgetown, O'Brienbridge was one of two men who were strapped inside a security cage that was dangling from a crane over the River Shannon on Thomond Bridge when it broke free and fell into the water yesterday afternoon.

The other man killed in the incident is understood to be from Kerry.

A third man who was working with them managed to free himself and swim to the surface where he was rescued.

He was taken to hospital but has since been released.
