Cratloe Post Office is to close in 2015.
Its understoond An Post has made the decision to withdraw services from the South East Clare village in March of next year following months of negotiations.
People in Cratloe had raised fears for the future of the village when An Post announced it was to review its service earlier this year.
In June it said this was due to a vacant contract in the area – and concerns over the number of people using the facility.
A community activist group formed and put forward a business plan to An Post over the course of this summer.
However this is now understood to have been rejected.
Fianna Fáil TD Timmy Dooley says he's shocked at the decision and is calling on Minister for Communications Alex White to reverse it immediately.
